Top executives from Americans technology giants Qualcomm and Amazon met with Minister of Communication and Information Technology Johnny G. Plate on Thursday to convey their interest in investing in Indonesia.
Qualcomm, a multinational semiconductor and telecommunications equipment company, is seeking to work with the Indonesian government to develop infrastructure for 5G, the latest wireless broadband technology, in the country.
Meanwhile, Amazon Web Service (AWS) discussed a realization of its investment plan in Indonesia, the protection of personal data, and AWS support for Indonesia's digital economy.
Qualcomm's president Cristiano Amon and AWS's vice president for global public policy Michael Punke met with the minister on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting in Davos, Switzerland.
Amon said in a statement that Qualcomm was "interested in supporting the development of 5G technology in Indonesia" as well as extending cooperation in other fields of information technology with the government.
Johnny said that Indonesia welcomed Qualcomm initiatives as the country is preparing to become one of the digital hubs in Asia.
Still, Johnny said that any collaboration must always bring added value to Indonesia. He invited the companies to invest in Indonesia's $34 billion project to build a new capital city in East Kalimantan. President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo envisioned the yet-to-be-built capital as a smart and environmentally friendly city.
Widodo Muktiyo, the director-general of communication and information at the ministry, said the meeting capped a series of productive negotiations and lobbying meetings with multinational companies and foreign countries in Davos.
